Tata Motors, known for manufacturing sturdy and value-oriented vehicles, has witnessed a sharp decline in the sales of its mid-size SUV, the Tata Harrier, during May 2025. The automaker sold only 894 units of the Harrier in May, marking a notable drop when compared to competing models in the same segment.

According to monthly sales data, Tata Harrier's numbers lag significantly behind rivals. For instance, the Mahindra XUV700 recorded sales of 6,435 units in the same period. Even the larger Tata Safari, which shares many features with the Harrier, saw better sales figures at 1,109 units last month.

The Harrier's sales slump is attributed to a few critical shortcomings in its current offering. The SUV is powered solely by a 2.0-litre diesel engine producing 168 bhp and 350 Nm of torque. In contrast, rivals such as the Mahindra XUV700 offer two powertrain choices, including a petrol variant. The absence of multiple engine options may be deterring potential customers seeking flexibility.

Additionally, the Harrier lacks an all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant, a feature that is available in the XUV700. This, combined with the fact that the Harrier is a 5-seater while the XUV700 provides a 7-seat layout, positions the latter as a more attractive value proposition. Buyers may see the XUV700 as offering more features and utility at a lower price point than the top-end Harrier.

To address these challenges, Tata Motors has introduced the Harrier.ev, an electric version of the SUV equipped with AWD and additional technology enhancements. This move is seen as a strategic attempt to regain market interest and improve overall sales.

There is also industry speculation that Tata may consider launching a petrol-powered Harrier variant in the future, along with an AWD configuration in its internal combustion engine (ICE) models. Such updates could help broaden the Harrier’s appeal in a competitive segment.

With consumer demand shifting towards vehicles offering multiple drivetrain options and higher feature sets, automakers are under pressure to diversify offerings. Tata’s upcoming strategies for the Harrier lineup will be crucial in determining its future standing in the SUV market.
